Words Are Finite, Emotions Are Infinite
A Project Translating Emotional Shifts into Brainwave Music
Some emotions cannot be fully expressed through words. When language fails, how do we communicate our feelings?
In a traditional tearoom deeply rooted in cultural heritage, we conducted an experiment with one host and twelve guests—using brainwave-generated music to express emotional fluctuations without spoken communication.
Issue
Redefining the Aesthetics of Silence
In the practice of the tea ceremony, the ideal is for the host and guests to resonate with each other without words. However, achieving this in reality is challenging.
By integrating modern science, it becomes possible to convey unspoken emotions, offering a new way to experience and express feelings beyond language.
Creation
Converting Emotions into Sound
Inside a tearoom in Uji, Kyoto, we explored non-verbal communication by capturing brainwave activity. A custom program modulated music in real-time based on emotional fluctuations, transforming the atmosphere dynamically. This experiment offered a new way to perceive and experience the subtle shifts in human emotion beyond language.
