A Thrilling Othello Experience with Light and Sound
A High-Energy Spin on the Classic Gam
To make Othello more thrilling and immersive, we developed a prototype by hacking a sound sampler with Python, turning every move into a sensory experience. (Showcased at SXSW 2018)
Issue
When Othello Becomes Stale and Boring
In Mitsuyo Demura’s home, Othello was a daily staple. Kids played tirelessly, but adults eventually lost interest. To make the game more exciting and unpredictable, product designer Kenji Jones was brought in to prototype an interactive version, sparking the creation of this project.
Creation
The More You Flip, The Louder It Gets
As players flip more pieces, the sound intensifies, building up excitement. Capturing a corner triggers an explosion sound, amplifying the stakes. Inspired by the chain reaction mechanics of "Puyo Puyo," this version of Othello actively heightens player engagement and competitive tension.
Technology
Hacking Sound for Instant Feedback
By hacking a music sampler with Python, we achieved real-time sound integration, making rapid prototyping possible and ensuring seamless audiovisual synchronization.
Future
Making Other Board Games Even More Exciting
Beyond Othello, this light and sound-enhanced gameplay concept can bring new levels of excitement to various board games. By integrating interactive elements, we aim to create more immersive and dynamic experiences.
If you're in the gaming industry and see potential in this approach, let’s collaborate.
