Experience Japan’s Local Ingredients Through Texture and the Five Senses

We created sweets inspired by onomatopoeic words that describe texture, using local ingredients from across Japan. Developed in collaboration with ingredient producers, these treats are safe for children, aiming to foster communication between parents and kids during snack time.

Issue

Turning Snack Time into Meaningful Connection

"Is this snack safe for my child?" "I wish I had time to make homemade treats every day." "I want something cuter and more engaging." Parents often feel conflicted about snack time, even when their children enjoy it. While meals take priority, snack time also offers a precious bonding moment. This project was born from the idea of making that time more fulfilling for both parents and kids.

Creation

A Design & Communication Concept Based on Onomatopoeia

Each product is named after the sound it makes when eaten. The packaging features playful character designs, and the website includes interactive elements—tapping a character plays its voice, turning snack time into a fun conversation starter. Children were actively involved in the design process, even selecting the product names themselves.

Local Ingredients for Future Generations

After infancy, children’s snacks often shift towards highly processed options. This project collaborates with local producers to create simple, guilt-free treats made from regional ingredients. Beyond offering healthier alternatives, it provides producers an opportunity to connect with future generations of consumers.

Future

Rethinking the Future of Food Through Snacks

Beyond retail, Onomatopoeia Snacks hosts educational workshops using sweets as tools—ranging from package design experiences to sensory-based dental health programs. Snacks are not just food; they are a medium for enriching food culture and communication. Looking ahead, the project aims to co-develop new products with seafood producers and innovators in future foods, expanding the conversation around sustainable and next-generation ingredients.
